With its 1.3 liter, 63 hp, 4 cylinder engine and simple steps to modify, it had found
a place in our hearts that would keep us interested for years to come. See commercials
for the Suzuki Samurai here.
While the Samurai was already a great truck Suzuki re-tuned the 1988.5 model to make
it better for everyday usage on-road which consisted of a smoother ride due to a
softer suspension as well as a larger anti-sway bar to reduce body roll.
The Suzuki Samurai arrived on dealer lots in the United States to make history in
1985 with the 1986 year model waiting to be purchased and driven. For thousands of
Americans it was love at first site and for many reasons.
One was the low cost, starting at $6200 it was easy to own, second was the security
of a four wheel drive which was an added bonus.
Coming in third was the great gas mileage that it could achieve boasting an average
of 28 miles per gallon city and highway combined which was something to be said for
a 4x4 truck.
Fourth was the option of owning a convertible for which you would have had to invest
much more to get this type of vehicle considering Jeep was the other option.
The Suzuki Samurai added up to lots of fun at a very low price tag and it was widely
accepted by the proof of first year sales which totaled over 47,000 sold.
This would continue for years to come with over 150,000 being sold within the first
3 years of its introduction.
Many do not know this but the Samurai also set a sales record for having the most
first-year sales of any Japanese car manufacturer.
Within the same year the Samurai Suzuki’s reputation was damaged by reports that
claimed it was unsafe and prone to rollover (watch the videos below to learn more).
It’s a real eye opener when you see the actual footage that was recorded of the Suzuki
Samurai performance during testing.
Hopefully this video will help clear up many misunderstandings that I have heard
from others over the years regarding one of the best all around vehicles to ever
touch down on this planet.
